Okay - so they technically weren't really steelhead as they haven't gone to sea and returned, but that would pretty much be the only difference in the fish being pulled out of the lake. They planted 2500 steelhead hatchery fish (rainbow trout), but these guys looked like they were on steroids! BIG shoulders, small heads - THICK fish that looked much more like salmon. Most are over 3 pounds and 15" in length.

My buddy pulled out a 22" 6 pounder yesterday afternoon! Everybody was catching - a boat would have been really handy to follow the school around.

I was wondering when the first reports would start rolling in. How were the crowds?

These aren't steelhead, they're just regular rainbows planted every fall around 2-3 pounds from the Issaquah hatchery.

Crowds were big. Combat fishing, casting across lines, etc. I went this morning and it was a bust. Only people I saw hooking up today were those on boats or fishing from the east shore.

That is not a steelhead and it isn't part of the steelhead planted across w wa lakes. The steelhead they planted were 10-13 inches and have clipped fins since they were originally planned to be released in rivers and hatchery steelhead. Nice fish either way!!

My boss told me 2500 trouts were planted (all in 3 lb range) in the lake. Must be the reason for the big crowd.

The fish in the pic is about 18" and 4lbs. The biggest fish I didn't get a photo of solo - just on the stringer & in the cooler. As an FYI, I KNOW they aren't steelhead (as my first comment of the post says that), so no need to educate me on what the fish is. Thanks anyhow though.

I think I remember seeing you fishing Seattle Pat. I am glad you caught one I found the crowds really tough to deal with especially as I had my little one with me. I would like to go again but I am thinking this is a place to go with others so you can cover each other. I am going to try again but not too hopeful. Just want to get one fish like that this season but you are right not easy without a boat. Do you think there is a time of day that might be just a tad less crowded.. meaning a space available to fish from?

Hi Heatherlyfish -
My buddy Tim went there this morning - he said no action. I'm guessing it's already fished out except for the lucky few that just happen to be at the right place at the right second a fish is going by their lure/bait.

Not surprising. Too bad because it is the closest lake to me that is open still. I might still give it another go when it dies down just for fun and see if I find one that has made it. Stocking is supposed to go through the 12th. I really want to try my had at river fishing.. yet finding a place not over crowded is also hard. Thanks for the info.
