Ok guys, I had reel high expectations for today. My plan was to arrive at the crack-o-dawn to get a prime spot at the honey hole. Traffic (ouch) delayed my arrival until about 7:00am. During the week, you would think this would be plenty early... Not! Apparently the memo went out. Most of the good honey hole, vantage points were already taken. Fine, OK. There was a small opening at the south end of the line. It would challenge my casting through a small opening between the trees. I accept this challenge. I was excited to try out my new Kastmaster, colored with blue, purple and speckles to see if it could entice a bite. I also setup a rig per recommendations to float power bait off the bottom using a barrel sinker and #10 treble hook, loading with two power eggs. I heard that a worm floated under a bobber knocked them dead also. That was on standby. I invested $14.80 last night to gain the 2 pole endorsement. I should have done this a long time ago, but I am a cheapskate, what can I say.
With power bait out on the bottom, I made some thread-the-needle casts between trees with the Kastmaster. On the fifth cast, fish on! The typical 12" steelie wannabe, but a lot of missing scales on its sides. I decided to let this one go. It gladly swam away to frolic again with its friends. Meanwhile, the guy to my right is in the exact honey hole I wanted, and he is getting fish right and left using both rods. I just get to stand there and watch. I try to engage him in conversation, but English was not his first language. Closer examination of my bottom setup revealed that power bait don't float. I tried the power dough per SeattlePat's suggestion, but even that will not float my treble hook off the bottom as needed. I added a small corky. That did float the presentation, but no bites.
Is there power bait or similar that floats? Are my treble hooks too heavy? I am not mastering this simple setup.
I also learned that rubber worms don't sink. This is a real bummer, when the intent is to drop down a few feet under a bobber. I am guessing that a real worm will likely sink. Unfortunately, I misjudged a cast and lost my rigging in the tree. I lose my new Kastmaster on another nature encounter, so I am done with this suck hole next to the honey hole.
I moved north up the shoreline and explored other possibilities, hoping to regain my composure and accept some fish for dinner. Composure regained. No more fish. 10:00am. Time to go. I went back by honey lane and saw three fish caught during my brief stroll, so at least some people are having a 5* day. I guess I learned a few more things.
Happy fishing!
