Nice, I was one of the 100 people that was luck enough to get a pass to fish that lake opening day in the early 90's when it opened up for the 1st time since the eruption. Best trout fishing experience ever. Caught over 30 very large bows that day. Glad to see its still producing

My buddy Craig and I fished it years ago~ towed our 2 float tubes to the far end of the lake with my 12' gamefisher boat and 36lb electric motor. Proceeded to catch and release quite a few beautiful fish on flies but when we went to head back my motor died, winds picked up in our face so had to row all the way back to the launch towing 2 float tubes! Took hours as each of us took turns rowing while the other ran alongside on the trail cheering him on! Great lake and can't wait to go back with an extra battery!! haha

cosme9242: I was probably fishing up there the same time you were and never met ya. I agree, there was alot more big(19-21 inch) trout to be caught up there in the early days. I keep hoping there will be a turn around in the fish size from what it is now, but I'm not holding my breath. You can still have 30-40 fish days, but they run alot smaller now. Average size is 13 inches with an occasional one in the 17-18 inch size.
salmonbarry: I can relate to your dead battery experience. It's happened to me once or twice too. And the wind in the afternoon is usually out of the west. Now I have at least 3 and sometimes 4 batteries in the boat and also an extra electric motor just in case. I can't row my boat anymore, so I keep an extra motor on board if I should need it. Anyway it has always been a pleasure to spend the day up there. Hopefully the road stays open for a few more weeks.
