It surely was not a stellar day by any means; the only thing that produced was the weather. Truly, it was a gorgeous day, with a light breeze, sunny skies and pleasant temps (for February). But if there was ever a day to zap all of the fishing confidence out of a man, this day would be it. From 11:30AM-6:20PM I treaded the waters of silver lake, eyes peeled for any sign of activity on the surface, and what might lie beneath on the sonar.
Beep, Beep, Beep, the fish alarm sounded all throughout the day. I mean what the hell, the lake seemed to be covered in fish! They were anywhere from 22-50 feet deep, and never more than 3-5 feet off the bottom, and they were everywhere! they were so numerous that I began doubting my equipment, but nevertheless I fished the more promising clusters and covered as much water as I could.
I started trolling F4 flatfish behind dodgers, then switched to spinner-enabled hoochies tipped with worm bits/gulp maggots. And of course, always slathered with a fair share of Pro-Cure gel, in Bloody Tuna, Shrimp, and Trout Mix. Nada. So I put the trolling rod away and busted out the drop shot. Nightcrawlers and gulp trout worms didn't even get a bump.
As the day faded, so did my hopes for catching fish. But as the night approached, swirls began appearing on the surface of the glass water, signaling the presence of some sort of fish presence. These rollers were scattered rather few and far between, with a couple schools making appearances. They were probably eating a small insect hatch that was hatching; there was some sort of insect that was popping up in modest numbers. It looked kinda like a mosquito, but wasn't.
I crept up upon these sly rollers with my 9ft pontoon, and slung 1/8oz spoons in their direction. Whap! A hit! I set the hook with a force so mighty that the hooks must have been ripped from the fish's mouth, cause other than a spurt of drag peeling, my line fell slack once again. A couple more light tugs, one right at the boat, and night finally closed it's door on this adventure. These light hitting fish may have been Kokanee or trout, I don't know. Kokanee? What? Believe it or not, there are kokanee in silver lake. Whether or not I tangled with them today, I will never know, but I will come into the next adventure with an arsenal to be reckoned with.
