Had the invite to fish with a WALAKES member who I haven't seen in quite awhile. He fishes from a canoe, and we went decided to hit some new water to the both us. at least.
Arrived at Flowing lake about 0800. We paddled a slow troll down the lake. I was dragging a bead headed Wooly Bugger, black and gold. Floating line/9' leader, fly weighed. Byron was dragging a Rapala, I think.
No hits, no nuttin'. Eventually we posted up in that one corner of the lake that has all of those exposed looking pilings. We sat there and soaked some dough bait. Fairly soon I had the pop/pop of a fish on.
Usually I am trolling with no bait, so I am used to letting the fish convince me that he has committed to the offering, before I set the hook. However of course with the Powerbait, my delay of setting the hook meant fish was DEF. hooked.
Brought in a solid 16" rainbow. Fish looked very healthy and solid not skinny. Fish was bleeding pretty good, so brought home for supper.
We trolled inside of the buoys, down the middle of the lake, drifted via the wind from West to East, etc. All sorts of approaches. Wedding Rings, Wooly Buggers, Inline spinners, Kastmasters, Worms under a bobber on the drift, etc. etc.
Saw only a few scattered fish surface.
Talked to a woman at the launch who said another woman down the shoreline had caught a 20" bass via a worm, from shore. Saw no other fish caught. Was a fair amount of boats out there. Wondered if any of them had been the folks from the forum talking about going out today, Spoonman and others?
Nice lake. I liked that the end near the larger launch/park, had a solid rocky bottom. A place where you could visualize some bass beds in a few months. Other places were kind of weedy, but plenty of places with a clean bottom.
Thanks for invite, Byron.
