Holy smokes is Chelan kicking out some fish! This report will cover two days.
On Wednesday the 11th I woke up to a 2:30 am alarm and hit the road for the east side. Much to my surprise I couldn't find anyone to jump in my boat with me so I was fishing solo. On the water a little after 7am and a quick run up lake. Dropped my first rod down to 100 feet and turned to start gearing the other down rigger, fish on. That's how the morning went. The longest time I went without hooking a fish was about 4 minutes and even though I lost a few I managed a Lake Chelan 10 Kokanee limit in about an hour. Average was around 15 inches with two pushing the 17 inch mark. I fished the next few hours playing around with lakers and managed a few little guys. Onto day two.
On Thursday the action was steady, but not as hot as the day before. Gregg and his friends joined me for a retirement party and we proceeded to put a PILE of Kokanee in the boat. Running four rods seemed almost impossible at time with doubles, triples, and even a famed "quad." We fished will about 1 pm and even though we only landed about 60% of the fish, we put 28 nice Kokanee in the boat.
To the business side of things. HOOCHIES! 2-2 1/2" pink and orange hoochies or flys with blades in front of them fished 10" behind UV dodgers were the money ticket. Shoepeg corn and my favorite scent. Set back 25-30' and fish below 100'. All of my big fish were below 140' deep and caught going 1.4-1.6 mph. And its VERY hard to see the bite that deep. Some fish would crush the rod and others it would barely move.
I have a few open dates this week then I don't have any until the 15th and 16th of April. And to think, fishing hasn't even begun to get "good" over there!
