Me and my buddy went out fishing over the weekend. We started fishing Saturday evening, casting out for bass. I was testing out a lure I am very new to, a bass jig, as suggested by Amx. I cast around the docks by my dock, skipping and jerking the jig. My buddy was using a torpedo topwater, with no luck. I also used a senko, but neither of us had a single bite from bass.
Around 7:30 we switched to trout, floating powereggs from the bottom. We had no luck for about 45 minuets, but then the sun set and the fish frenzy started. Fish were biting left and right, from all depths. Most of the fish were just little dinks, fresh out the hatchery, but we also reeled in a couple yearlings. Fish were biting 3 feet if not less in front of the dock we were fishing from. In total, by 10:15 PM we had caught 15 fish, five or six of them keeper size, but let all of our fish go, to save the trouble of gutting them at night, and many more lost fish and bites. Only problem was I lost a fishing pole and some gear because of the darkness, but was able to fish it out.
The next day, we set out about 6:45, using the same method as in the morning. My buddy caught 3 fish, 2 keeper, one dink, and I got 2 keepers. We gutted these fish, but one was spoiled. Does anyone have tips for gutting fish without a mess and clean up, its hard to do down at the dock. We left the dock around 9:00 AM and got some coffee.
After getting coffee and breakfast, we decided to see if the bite for bass/perch was on down at the Lake Meridian Park docks. Not too many people down there, compared to what its like when the bite for trout is on, but still a good amount of people. Saw a few people catch trout, but nothing else. I saw a perch swimming in the shallows of the left side of the dock, nothing else, but a 6 lb smallmouth supposedly hangs out around there. Tried out a lot of stuff, but no chasers, but I did test out a lot of new gear that I just got.
At around 12:00 PM we headed back, with intentions to fish my dock again. After resetting my gear and poles, i decided I wanted to troll the lake, and try to get my livingston boat in the water again. After a struggle with getting the boat down to my launch, I got the boat set up, and trolled for 10 minuets, and got line all wrapped around my trolling motor. After going back to shore and getting my motor back in working order, we set out again and trolled for about 30 minuets, catching one fish on a blaze orange luhr jensen flatfish, and got another solid bite which got away. Overall, a good weekend fishing.
I am still stumped on how to fish for bass in Meridian, I've done everything I can. There is a rockbed and part of a sunken dock where I can cast to from my dock, but there just seems to be no bass, or any fish near the shores of my dock. Have bass still not moved up the lake yet? It just doesn't add up to me, its the start of May with gorgeous weather, but the fish just aren't there. Can someone explain this to me. Also if anyone has tips on how to transport a two-hulled boat that would be helpful.
