The family wanted to go out on the boat and since they aren't the early morning types and we had to check out of the hotel by 11 I decided we would forgo Chelan and hit Wapato up for a little boat ride and entertainment before heading home.
We got to the lake about noon, launched, rigged my daughter's Barbie pole up with a weighted spinner to cast and then pulled out a couple of the kokanee rods. Pretty much the whole lake runs about 50-60'deep so I ran my wife's pole with a Dick Nite 50/50 flasher followed by an orange Gringo made inline kokanee spinner (no extra weight). For mine I tied on an inline 1/2oz weight, then used the gang troll that was in the envelope from FWG I got from the picnic (Thanks FWG!!) and a pink smiley blade fly from Macks (another freebee from last year's Chelan picnic - Thanks Macks!!). We started circling the lake at about 1.5 mph and the lines about 70-80' behind the boat.
In the next couple hours my wife's rod hooked/landed 1 and had a drive by and mine hooked/landed 1 and lost one. Both the landed fish were brought in by my daughter and the one lost we was going to give netting a shot (until I lost the fish anyway). It was a fun family couple of hours in the sun. We started packing it in about 2 since we had the long drive home and at the request of my daughter to "go fast" made one blast across the lake before calling it a day.
I have never fished Wapato before, what a great little lake to get kids on fish! We'll be back!
