I took my friend Jay out to Newman; we launched at the crack of dawn on the first official day of summer. We motored across the lake and started to pitch a drop shot and unweighted senkos looking for some largemouth. It was a slow morning and we only boated about 10 bass with the biggest one going about 3 lbs. Once the sun was getting higher in the sky the bite stopped and we were off the water by 1100. I had not been to Newman in about 2 years but I expected to see a little more action, I only had one hit on a top water first thing in the morning, not what I expected in mid June. We did see one 2 1/2 lb largemouth still guarding a bed which I thought was a little unusual. Did not see any tigers and did not see anyone else having much luck. It's always hard fishing a lake on a Sunday morning not knowing how much pressure it received the day before. It was still a nice way to start off Fathers Day with enough time left in the day to spend it with my family.
