After reading the reports of all the walleyes being caught we decided to take a family fishing trip (minus the wife) and ventured over the pass to fish the Potholes for the first time 25-28 June. Besides the nasty heat we had an amazing 4 days. Thursday the 25th after getting set up at the State Park, we did what every newby fisherman does and watched where the locals headed and fished from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. we managed 3 walleye with the biggest measuring in at just over 22 1/2 inches, 4 catfish and 1, 3.5 lb smallmouth. We were stoked to head out the next morning after having luck the evening before without any knowledge of the lake. Friday the 26th we were on the water at 4:15 and back at camp by 10:30 a.m. trying to beat the heat. Ended up catching 12 walleyes and keeping 7 of them. Most of the walleyes kept were in the 18-24 inch range with the exception of a 25 1/8 incher and, 6 jumbo perch and 5 catfish. Headed back out that evening caught 7 walleye and keeping 5, again in the 18 to 24 inch range, 14 jumbo perch and 8 catfish. Day 3 Saturday the 27th the faucet turned off, we missed the alarm and didn’t make it out on the water until after 7:30 am and fished hard until 10:30 am when we couldn't take the heat anymore, we ended up with 3 walleye's 16, 19, and 22 inches, 1 perch and 1 small mouth. That evening we hit the water at 5 pm and fished until 10 pm. ended up with 1, 19 inch walleye and 4 catfish. Sunday the 28th we fished for 2 hours prior to having to leave the campground and we ended up with a 17 inch and a 19 inch walleye, 3 perch and 4 catfish. As far as baits went it didn’t really matter what we were using as long as it was green or orange and had a crawler on it or if it was a rattle-trap casted to the weed lines. Not one fish was caught in deeper than 11 feet of water. All and all it was an amazing time and amazing memories with my two boys who are already chomping at the bit to make this an annual trip.

Very nice report. Potholes is on the bucket list for me but much earlier or later in the season. You and your crew are troopers on that heat!

Nice going! How crowded was the park, launch, and on the water?

The state park had lots of open spaces, we never waited to launch or recover and there were very few boats out fishing, most of the boats that were out fishing were targeting bass so we never had to fight for an area to fish.

Were there a lot of bass fishermen and boats?
