After the 99 degree heat of the afternoon diminished, my friend Robbie and I decided to try Alta Lake for some kokanee. The lake was planted in 2013, 14, and again this year. I had hopes that these fish would have grown well and with the light pressure been easy pickings. I was half right.

The lake itself is not very large, and with just two water skiers and two jet skis the noise was annoying, and the waves made for a less than pleasant evening cruise. The fishing, however, was every bit as good as I expected it to be. We immediately started catching kokanee at 35-45 feet on the rigger. The lake maximum depth is only 85 feet, and the "deep" part of the lake meant we were in a fairly small circular trolling pattern. We didn't stay out as long as I had planned, as getting up at 3am to go sockeye fishing finally got the best of me. Even so, in short order we had six shiny kokanee in the boat, averaging right at 12". Not tiny, but I was hoping to see some 14-15" fish.

Alta would be a fun, easy place to catch kokanee that don't get targeted much, if you can stand the power boats and jet skis.

Nice Report. Think I only fished this lake one time but I have camped at the State Park there many times.
