I decided to go out to Long Lake (Spokane) to give my best shot at catching some trout. The report/hot spot made last week had me eager to get to a place I can fish for trout that isn't a huge drive. Got to the water at 9:30 and fished powerbait off bottom about 12" and spun a brown trout 1/4 oz rooster tail. At about 10:20 ish I caught and landed a good 16" trout. It was my ONLY bite of the day and I'm glad to have landed it.

The water was super dirty, thus i was fearful of the fish not being able to see my lure. I figured for sure that the power bait would work but to no avail. I left before the rain came down and hit it again around 4:25pm. I tried worms and mallows of bottom at 16" and casted lures, rapalas, spoons, mepps, panther martin... nothing at all. I stuck it out until 6:20 or so then I packed it in.

Anyone know where the trout like to lay on those rocks past Tum Tum? Some places were deep, other not so much. The one I landed was about 12 feet deep.

It was fun, I hope to have better luck tomorrow!

FYI, we had to move your report to the correct location. Long lake is in Stevens county. The lake you were fishing was Lake Spokane in Spokane County.

Well thanks! I think I had the name of the "lake" wrong, its actually the Spokane River but because of the dams at Nine Mile and Long Lake, it makes a "lake." I've heard it called Long Lake AND Lake Spokane so I put them both up there. I do believe it is in Stevens county however because I fished right off Highway 291 right past Tum Tum. It was my first post so I apologize for any errors and thanks for helping me out!

Well.. the dam is Long Lake dam, the lake is Lake Spokane. According to the UGNS, rivers are considered to be "in" whichever county they originate from. The Spokane River originates in Spokane County, so it belongs to Spokane. Since the river contains a reservoir or lake, the lake then resides in Spokane County as well. I'm not sure on the history of where the naming got all messed up, but it is indeed Lake Spokane, often mis-labeled or referred to as Long Lake. Likely due to the name of the dam that holds it up. My response usually directs people to Lake Grand Coulee, which of course doesn't exist.

I've tried a few times to locate the trout around those rocks, but all I've ever caught on that whole stretch is perch, and tons of 'em.

you have it right you are at long lake in spokane, this site has caused the confusion cause there is a long lake in stevens county up by colville area. I live at long lake been that way; way before these new people want to be more politically correct.

Hey mjfarmz, its ok to call it Long. Everyone from here knows what you mean. Family has a place out there and so did a few others and growing up out there my whole life it was always called Long by all the old timers. There are a lot of slimers in there to be caught, we drug the aluminum boat out last Friday and caught a few trolling. Tight lines......

I was born in Spokane and we always called it Long Lake. Still is and always will be called that by me. On the other hand NWFR has to be geographically correct and calls it lake Spokane. It is in both Stevens and Spokane counties. Maybe there is a way to identify it to help with clarification for the posts. As always many thanks to the NWFR team for a great site! - Alan

Same. Lived here all my life. When we went water skiing out of Nike mile resort, we were skiing on long, never referred to it as lake spokane growing up. Not sure when it started being referred to as that, but it's always been referred to as long lake.

mjfarmz you fished the right depth. 10-15 ft is best but I use an 18" leader off the bottom and 4lb test to make sure the bait is always floating. The bite died with all the rain because the water became murky. As soon as the water clears up it will be on again. Good luck!

It's Long Lake, always will be. We all knew what you meant. That spot around TumTum is fun to fish but I've never in my life seen so much litter in a public place. I can't believe it hasn't been shut down already because of that. Last time I was there I saw plastic bags full of trash tied up in the trees, big empty juice containers, lure packages that people just opened and tossed on the ground, just tons of crap.
