After a decent day of fishing up in Monroe yesterday I decided to stop by Beaver Lake Park for a few casts while I was "on my way to the store". This slight diversion in the middle of the late afternoon turned into nearly a 3 hour stopover!

Again, we can be blessed with such great weather and enjoy it too! Fishing from the peninsula picnic table my first setup was rigged for bottom fishing with a 16" leader, bass weight, and two orange floating power bait eggs. My second rig was geared with a small silver dick nite and split shots for casting weight.

I had a very light nibble within the first hour on the power-egg rig, but missed it. A fella in a float tube was trolling with a fly-rod got a really great hit in the middle of the lake. The lake was so serene that everybody could hear us cheer him on, it was really a great moment and it makes me remember why I love this sport so much.

After about two hours in (around 5pm or so) the action started to pick up. I missed two more very light bites which I think I can attribute to a too-quick hook-set. So when the next bump came I let him have it for a bit longer before setting in. My patience paid off and I brought up a small 11 inch, but feisty dark colored rainbow trout. I missed two more extremely soft bites a bit later and then decided that perhaps I should actually go to the store like I said I would.

A man and his two very young children settled in next to me and they were having the best of times. The kids (maybe 6 or 7 years old) were just happy to be out at the lake and best of all they seemed to be incredibly well educated on baits and fishing. It reminded me of when I was younger and my dad use to take me to this very same lake to fish. They were having good luck using a carolina style rig with a huge leader (probably 24-30 inches) with powerbait tipped with a piece of worm.

All in all though it was a nice "trip to the store"!

tight lines!
