Great morning at Lake Chelan. Launched out of the State Park, then drove around until I saw fish on the finder. Threw marks down and once I noted a cluster of way points in 170' of water, I went back and fished. I vertically jigged a chartreuse 1oz PK Flutterfish and they smashed it! Most of the fish were 3-5lbs, then suddenly I got snagged...no...,um,...um, that's not bottom...that's a really big fish! After 3 line pealing runs, I finally got to see this 34"x19.5", 16lb fatty! That was fun! I think I'm getting a hang of the vertical jigging program. I was done fishing in about 3 hours with 6 nice fish in the live well. I drove back to the State Park launch and was met by a very friendly State Game Warden, who did an inspection of my boat and live well. Everything was in order, so that was very low stress.

Great report and have to try that next time as I saw some huge marks over by Mac bar that would have been fun to drop in on!

Thanks for the nice report on jig fishing. A lot of fishermen have started using jigs on lake trout especially on Flathead and Flaming Gorge. Some are catching 100 fish a day on Flathead during "mack days" on jigs. Most of the guides that consistently catch fish over 20 lbs. on Flaming Gorge also use jigs. Not only can you see the fish bite the lure, it is fun to reel them up on light line. My experience has been that large lake trout usually lie belly to the bottom and are not interested in chasing a lure on a downrigger or leaded line but will bite a jig that is sitting directly in front of it's snout.

how heavy are your Jigs. I was trying 3/4 and was drifting away from the bottom

If you're fishing really deep, like over 80 feet, use 1-2oz jigs. 170 feet? 2oz at least. If you're vertical jigging, using a depthcounter reel can be useful. Not necessary, but easier to find a specific depth if experiencing lure drift.

I use 1-2oz. Jigs and jigging spoons. It just depends on wind and drift speed. I also use the spot lock on my trolling motor with helps keep my on the spot.
