Fished Samish this morning for the first time in years! Ever since my windows got smashed out I hadn't been back as it seems to be an ongoing problem unfortunately. With the AIS station there on Sunday's now I figured it would be safer. I had hoped to get into some largemouth but I only saw one today and he turned off about 10 feet from the boat. Smallmouth were willing but the biggest of the day was 2.9lbs. I caught several in the 2.0-2.9lb range, some dinks as well. I started fishing in the south end and was surprised to see a few fish still bedded?! I guess with the water temps only being in the low 60's that should be expected. They were small as well so definitely the last of it.

I fished some topwater in the early morning rain and all the attention that got was on the outside edges of pads and the bites were pretty weak with the fish following for a few feet then taking a pop at it only to grab the back of the bait. Not what I was hoping for and I honestly probably should have gone to Terrell in this weather! Motored through the flats pretty fast as I didn't want to fish around spawning fish. I finally just decided to motor back north and look for drop offs and deeper water docks hoping to find some post spawn fish? I was marking a lot of suspended fish but crankbaits only resulted in a dink. Grubs didn't get touched by anything but perch, same with jigs. Did not feel like drop-shotting so didn't bother trying. Got around transition banks and the docks on them and began seeing an increase in activity. Spinnerbait seemed to get the most attention so I just rolled with it. Casting shallow and keeping the bait high enough to wake the surface if they didn't blast it the first time I would drop the rod tip and burn it and they would come back and slam it 80% of the time. Anywhere the bottom rolled off under a dock was good it seemed. I hit a couple on the point north of the boat launch that has a huge flat as the wind had been blowing on it pretty consistently all morning. This flat drops off quick! I merely followed the break and threw just up on the shallow part and retrieved back over the break, if I saw a rock I could almost call the cast. In this area the spinnerbait I had been using finally gave up and broke in half....not unusual as I use this technique up on Whatcom in the summer and go through 3-4 of them in a day, yes even the "titanium" ones :)

Not a bad welcome back. I love the changes they've made to the launch and parking area!! Now how about some more patrols in the area to nab the idiots that keep smash and grabbing before one of us gets ahold of them....I imagine the are booked and released the same day but maybe they will get the message and move on?

Great report B8. am surprised you did not throw a 4 or 5 inch Senko and any twin tail grubs..found that to work great around and in front of
docks on the west side. give me a shout on email, if you will.

I threw a Senko a little in the morning but it got the perch excited. I slow rolled and jigged grubs and just got dinks as well.

Forgot to mention, ran into bcalvert at the launch when I was leaving and we traded some AIS stories ha ha. Hope you nailed some smallies!

Nice report! You fish so many of the lakes that I have fished in the past. I last fished Samish on Sept. 24, 1987. Didn't do great but did catch a few largemouth - the best only 2 pounds even. I didn't know there were smallmouth in that Lake.
