I took Glenn and Jim out to Long to try and find some of the last spawning crappies of the year. We found them alright, we boated 150+ and kept 116 9-14' crappies. Most we caught around fallen trees and on the weed edge off the ends of docks. The crappie look like they are about to scatter for the summer any day now. Casting a 1/32 oz jig with a chartreuse grub body worked the best. Water temp was right at 62 and the fish were in 3-10 FOW.

Oh my god I am so jealous. Took the girlfriend out today for our first time looking for these guys. Only caught 3 bass. I didn't know they would be that shallow. We got the bass in about 25 fow.
We were using crappie nibbles. Any suggestions on other bait?

Surf,
Just use a simple 2 inch crappie jig or a 2 inch power minnow on a 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 oz. jig depending on the wind. We just cast them towards shore in about 3 FOW, let them sink to the bottom and slow jig them out to about 10 FOW. Any fallen tree along the left side of the lake going down river was holding fish on Friday. We did not need to tip our jigs with anything, chartreuse and green/black were the best colors.

Mark, great info. Thanks. BTW, why on earth do you keep so many crappie? Wouldn't it be better to leave them to breed? Keeping a few to eat is cool, but hundreds?

Yeah, WTF. What is wrong with you? Why would you keep so many fish? Are you trying to ruin the fishing for everyone else? Are you going to clean and eat all of those fish? You should have your license taken away from you. Most disappointing report I have read in a Long Time. No pun intended. Shame on you.
