Got up and hit the lake before the 4th of July circus arrived at the lake. As it turns out, I didn't have much time. Once the wake-boarders with their electronica music cranked, the water skiers, and the jet skiers showed up, the fish instantly became close mouthed. Rained on and off all morning. Was hoping the crap weather would provide just a little reprieve from the pleasure craft... nope. By 9am I was getting tossed around. Later it was like a danged slalom course of me trying to weave in and out of boats. Finally said screw it and got off the water. The lake is getting harder and harder to fish. The opportunity window just keeps getting shorter. Going to try Baker Lake in a few weeks.
Macks 4in dodgers, 12 - 14 inches of leader to a size 6 green Doc Spratley fly. On the downrigger all bites were at 20 feet. Tried 15 - 40. Other line had 1 1/2 ounces of lead. That put that line at around 15 feet, give or take. Water temp was just under 71. Speed was between 1.25 and 1.5. Seemed like slower today was better. Fish were 14, 15, 16, and close enough to 17 that I will in fact call it 17 inches. Couldn't get that last one in before the boats showed up.
At one point I was tying leader onto a new fly because the last fish had pulled the flash band off of it, so I wasn't paying real close attention to my lines. Noticed the downrigger line was out of the clip, and the rod was bent pretty hard. Grabbed the rod, got to feel the fish for a few seconds before it gave one real good tug, and broke my loop knot at the snap swivel. Crap. That's the last clip in the video. 2X lately the best fish got off.
