Headed to Lake Stevens on Saturday with the plan of practicing drop shot fishing. Only tried this technic a few times with minimal success. Got on the water around 7am and started with a top water along the shoreline targeting docks and any other structure. Nothing was working so I started looking for drop offs and points where there might be some fish holding. Rigged up a drop shot and located some fish down to about 20 feet. Seemed to be mainly holding on the bottom of drop offs. Was getting a lot of perch interested but no Smallies... Wasn't really producing anything so I put on a crankbait and started working weed edges and structure. Caught a LMB in about 10 feet. Weighed just under 3lbs. Had 5 other LMB same size follow him all the way to the boat. Tried to see if his brothers were hungry but nada.
Stuck with the crankbait most of the rest of the day with the occasional drop shot if the area looked good. Was fishing more structure with the crankbait and got slammed by a 2lb 10oz Smallie that I saw surface about 20 feet from my boat during the middle of my previous cast. So I reeled in and tossed it in his direction, as soon as the crankbait got near the area where I saw him surface he nailed it. I have tried this countless times and very rarely have had success.
Love the fight that Smallies put up! Pound for pound they have to be one of the best fighting fish.
Had a pretty cloudy day with a mist coming down most of it. Started clearing up around noon and I ended the day around 2pm
