Wife had our baby shower and I told her no chance on me staying and looking at blankets and clothes. I had a feeling that this may be my last time out this year, but we will see.

Grabbed a buddy and we headed out to Big Lake. I've only tried to fish it once before and it was a near epic disaster. Only had the trolling motor and a dying battery. Ended up rowing most of the length of the lake. Bad times. Anyways, took the gas today and a new battery and got after it. Hit the water about 2:30 and it poured for the first 3 or so hours as we worked our way south along the west bank. Joe started with a small crank and I started with the senko. Worked a variety of docks, logs and anything else I could find. By the time we got to the last dock before the pads on the south end I had boated two, Joe one, but only after he gave up on the crank and switched to a senko, and we missed quite a few as well.

On a side note, I have no idea how bass do some of the things they do! Twice I had one, fought with it for a while, it would pull drag and then all of a sudden instead of a fish I am now stuck on a dock pillar once and an underwater tree the other. I don't get it! How could I go from hooked in the fish to hooked in a tree in less than a second!?!? Crazy fish. Anyway...

Finally got to the south end and was sorta surprised at the amount of algae down there. It made a lot of the lilies a bit unfishable. Worked around towards the creek and got another to the boat. I was throwing a frog on the pads, but they seemed to be a bit too thick for the fish to grab ahold well.

A ton of dinks, 3 or 4 on but lost and 4 in the boat, all pretty good sized, 3+. All fish caught were on plastics. I caught one on a black with red flakes, and two on a brown shad with purple flakes. Not a bad day at all. Good way to skip a baby shower!

Bass often head for the nearest cover when hooked. When they catch a hook on something or wrap partway around something, it changes the angle of pressure, much like when you take the hook out. With all the tension and stretch of the line, the released hook very often catches on whatever it was, feeling instantaneous. That's what I've seen a few times underwater anyway. Sounds like more fun than a baby shower...

Exactly what fishinChristian said! Hence the monster hooksets you'll see with bass fisherman. you're not just setting the hook, you're trying to move the fish away from the cover, get him coming your way asap. I had a 4lber wrap me around a boat lift on Lake Goodwin in about 5' of water once, we came to a dead stop and were looking right at each other....the fish put it in reverse and I watched my bait pop right out of his mouth. They are wily buggers.
