Today I tried to disprove the old adage "a bad day fishing beats a good day at work"! Started when I rounded the corner only to see a closed gate??!! Got out and checked and fortunately no lock! Must have been locals messing around....pushed it open and drove up to the launch but then spent 15 minutes double checking the pertinent websites to be sure the place wasn't closed for some reason? Couldn't find anything so I launched. Once on the water I find that BOTH my bow and console electronics have error messages??? Reset and the console is fine but all the settings on the bow mount are off so another 15-20 minutes sorting that out and what do you know, I'm fishing. Fished the pilings out and around managing 1 sub 2lber. Get to the west side and manage another, then miss one about the same. Towards piling point I snag, go in to get it and it looks like someone else did as well as now I have about 15 feet of line wrapped around my prop! Unfortunately this cut into the 3M tape that holds on my Ninja Grass Blade and nearly cut it loose! Fish piling point without a nibble.... Fish all the way to the park and still nothing?
Motor across to fish the pad edge on the south side heading east. A couple casts in and fish on, looks to be about 4lbs, she runs up under the pads and it's a stalemate! That is until my 10lb braid gives up! Grrr, I knew I should have gone with 15! Oh well.
Continue down the east shore with a dink here and pounder there and a few snags mixed in. Get down by the NW corner and feel a tickle on my neck, reach back and flick my shirt a couple time and 2 seconds later it's mass chaos as the bee that was on my neck goes down my shirt!! 10 seconds later I'm stung in the left shoulder and half naked as I search for his stupid little bee body! Seriously contemplate throwing in the towel at this point but my wife has an appointment which means I have three more hours to fish if I choose? I choose.
Basically worked back through the same areas one more time switching up lures and depths but never crossed paths with another decent fish. Dinks and pounders with a sub 2 here and there. Senkos or frogs worked and I tried 3 different jigs, C-Rig, T-Rig, spinnerbaits, flipping baits and fished them all from shore to 20' including the outside weed edge way out from the east pad line.
Frustrating day for sure, now I suppose I could boil it down to the positives: gate wasn't locked, got the electronics working, caught fish, only got stung once, NGB didn't fall off etc.... but I love my job and I have had some pretty enjoyable days that I would trade for this day on the water, so for me at least the quote will read "getting skunked fishing beats a good day at work as long as all your crap functions and the bees aren't angry".
