Ran a quick test of the three new freshwater colors that are featured on our Old Goat Lures blog . Since I'm fishing out of a drift-boat, with a small electric trolling motor, I limited my tests to the south end of the lake.

For the first 45 minutes, I fished the green/black-scale with fluorescent orange tail. Nothing touched it.

Since I have a two-rod permit, I decided to fish the new purple/black-scale with orange tail against the red-oxide/fluorescent orange. (The red-oxide has been a go-to color, and lure, for Rock Lake.)

The purple/orange out-fished the red-oxide by a factor of four to one. In about an hour and a half, I was done. Had my limit and was ready to put them on ice.

Here's a short video:

pretty interesting lures you got there.what kind of speed do you troll these at?

Yakivegas: That's a great question!

I tend to vary the trolling speed and have caught fish at both a fast- and a medium-settings on the Minn Kota trolling motor. But, that said, you are the second person to ask for definitive speeds. (I'll bring a GPS the next time I'm out on Rock and provide you with actual numbers.)

Thanks!

Hi Donn thanks for the report. Looks like those fish at Rock love your lures. Will have to get some to run at Roosevelt .

I asked the speed question last week.

Had an opportunity, though limited, to test a 2.8" fluorescent green with pink tail yesterday. Wind conditions at Roosevelt shortened my test, but it did look great trolled at about 2.5mph. It brought a nice 17" 'bow to the net before I cut the test session short. You can read more in my Roosevelt report (once approved). :-)

Hewesfisher: Thanks for the info. (Look forward to reading your full report!)

I located a GPS/speed-app for my Android phone. I'll take it with the next time I'm on Rock or similar water and record speed data when trolling.

Donn - To the best of my knowledge there is no cell service down there. Will the phone GPS app work without cell service?

It has been a long time since I fished Rock Lake. Is there any improvements on the launch area - and is the launch area still owed by the land owner or has the WDFW bought the land and improved it. Thank you.

Bob: The launch at Rock Lake is as dicey as ever. (This is likely the most primitive launch I've ever seen or used. Definitely an issue for folks with larger boats.)

I'm not certain of ownership.
