One last trip to Sammamish before switching to saltwater for the winter. Blackmouth are calling!!

It was a wet one out there Wednesday for sure. Fishing was great, catching was ok. We went 6 for 14. Just could not get the critters in the boat. Fish on, fish off. Way it goes. All were 15-17 inch range.

We really had to work at it. Fish were scattered all over the lake so we covered a lot of water. The only thing consistent was they were at 45 feet. Green, orange and red all worked. Wedding rings, smile blades flashers didnt seem to matter. When we found them they seemed to be willing.

On the lake about 8, finally called it quits about 3.

Not posting a pic since I dont want to hear from people who cant tell the difference between a Lk Sammamish Cutthroat and a Kokanee. They arent even similar other than being a fish.

Tight lines!!!

Just don't get caught with one of them Kokanee out there. It is a big ticket. You would be surprised how many don't know the difference.

Yeah big ticket I'm sure. Cant even imagine and dont want to find out. Anybody have any idea when wdfw might open this lake to Kokanee? Think its been 15-20 years since they first planted.

Contrary to what you may have heard, they will never open it up for kokanee as the native kokes are protected. The city of Issaquah, Sammamish and the good citizens who live in the surrounding area have pretty much sucked all of water out of the ground so the fish no longer have healthy streams in which to spawn.

great fishery, but these are wild fish and everyone kept is one less for your next trip.
i always throw them back here so that they will be there next time.

sealark i totally agree with c&r on these fish but wdfw rules re fish caught on bait are what they are.. think i have done enough damage for one year. after i get my head kicked in chasing blackmouth prob come out and see if i can come up with something not using bait. anybody got any suggestions? maybe trolling flies or something.

rmrauscher: your info was spot on. Thanks! I think we talked a few years ago on the lake too.

I was checked on the boat launch by a WDFW officer. I had a couple of large cutthroat. The officer said that one of them appeared to be a crossbred trout and kokanee. It had spots on the back but a minimal slash under the jaw. It did not have the two teeth on the side on the gill plate meaning it was part kokanee. I had no idea these fish could interbreed. No ticket as a result. BTW - Fortunately I had released a nice koke earlier in the day .

trying not to use bait, the imperial spoon is a great lure. its made by Macks lures and i have produced on it out here.
also needliefish i have heard work well, you could try really any small spoon.

in the winter little black bugs called "Midges"take over the lake as it is a breeding ground (my family affectionately call these christmas bugs) during this time, you will see the lake covered with jumping fish (very beautiful and tempting) and if you cut a trout belly open, you will see they are full of theses little buggers. so maybe try a small black fly close to the surface moving very slowly. (these bugs float as eggs to the surface, then hatch and fly away). Really tempted to try fly fishing on the lake sometime.

Scents are huge too Lunker Lotion, Macks scents like trophy trout.. shrimp... Anise.. etc all good.

tight lines!
