I took a ride from Spokane to Eloika with my daughter today to check out the ice quality/quantity. The ice is still about 16 inches thick and holding up great, with all the rain and warming wet weather there is little snow left on the ice, it's been replaced with some slush and water on the surface, with a thin skin of ice on top of that.

The weather was light rain with mild temps. My daughter wanted nothing to do with fishing today, so I took the auger and a small amount of gear out and checked out the fishery while she hung out in the truck waiting. I had four or five bites in a short amount of time and landed two of them to bring home. There were at least four other groups out on the lake today.

On my way back in, I found a scene that pissed me off (pictured), there were five or six perch and a sunfish encased in surface ice, that someone caught and didn't bother to release or take home. In my opinion people like this ruin fishing for everyone.

Great Post.
When I saw that we had lost all Gravity I had no clue what to do. Guess that's one way to keep your boots dry!!!

I just wonder how you keep the tackle in the water.

I found the exact same thing back in December on Bear lake. 6 perch that were 9" long just stuck in the ice and water layer. Kinda bogus if you ask me. I tried cutting them open, trying to save them if possible. But they were greener then the west side forests

@ cumminsbassguy, I agree really bad form for someone to catch and leave on the ice. Bear lake? That's a juvenile fishing rules lake, only juveniles, licensed adults accompanied by a juvenile, or anglers with a disability who have a designated harvester card are allowed to fish that lake.

All perch should be kept and none should be released as you will otherwise end up with tiny perch like we have on Silver now. Used to be lots of big perch in Silver until selective harvest and maybe the tiger muskies died off some. That said nothing should be wasted either. They can be used in a variety of ways and perch bellies and the whole perch can be used as bait for lakers and pike. All bass should be release unless you are going add them to your fish dinner. I even bury the fish guts and heads under my tomato plants, so I essential have turned them into tomatoes by next fall.

Awesome info Bullpine. I was just reading an article this morning about how aggressively perch reproduce, I was not aware of how invasive they have become.

Same thing for me the other day. There was a mess of sunfish scattered about an area where some guys have had fires not to far from Jerrys. All had there eyes missing. If your going to use eyes, at least use the perch ones and release the sunnies. What a waste......
