This post is for those who responded to my “forum post” a couple weeks back regarding surf perch fishing in Westport. I usually don’t like reading reports where the person didn’t fish but I wanted to relay how the trip went for those of you who responded to my forum post. Here goes; My wife and I were in Grayland, WA from 10-04 through 10-11. We stayed at Grayland Beach State Park in one of the new sites (73) right at the edge of the dunes. Just a minute from the beach and almost full hook ups minus a sewer hook up. I was amazed by the size of the waves on the ocean. There was no way I could see to get a bait out to any fish lurking in these huge waves and I wasn’t interested in walking out into the water in fear of being swept away. We did explore Westport and did check out Half Moon Bay, the south jetty, and float 20 where the public fishing pier is located. There were some folks fishing the marina floats for the silvers but several told me they weren’t in yet in any real numbers. I did stand and wait for the schools to pass by and I did see a couple schools (maybe 15 fish per school) but it is a 2 or 3 cast event until they pass by again. Their frequency was maybe one or two schools per hour. There were some folks fishing for Jacks and were using a bobber with egg cluster, and they catching some fish. The jacks were 14 to 16 inches and I’ll bet very tasty. The boardwalk was very cool (never been there before) but I ended up not fishing it. Honestly, I thought it might not be that productive thinking it is likely fished hard nearly year round, so we moved on. Had I been alone I would have given it a try. I like the fishing to be active when I take my wife so she stays interested in fishing. As I mentioned above, we also did check out Half Moon Bay but I wasn’t sure if the perch would be in there so we watched the surfers and never wet a line. While at the south jetty, waves crashed over the rocks and it didn’t look safe so I passed. Sorry, it sounds like a bummer report but it was a great trip despite the fact we didn’t fish. Also, Next trip I will fish Half Moon Bay for sure after reading a final reply to my forum post and hearing that they are in there. Thanks again to all who wrote.
