I had to be in Tacoma twice today so I thought I would give salmon fishing a try. I fished at the dock at Point Defiance from about 10:30 to 12:30 using a filleted herring and a one ounce banana weight. No bites and didn’t see any follow either. There were thousands of little fish throughout the shore and at the dock area. A guy fishing on the dock said they were chum salmon. Then this big ball of fish boiled at the surface and he said they were herring because they were bigger. All I know is there were thousands and thousands of small fish. One guy was bottom fishing and he caught a 20 leg star fish. The other guy was fishing for salmon, he didn’t have any hits while I was there. He used some kind of jig then he switched to a buzz bomb and as I left he was using a herring plug. The fish checker said that there were 11 salmon for 17 boats that came in, that was about 11am. The several I saw come in looked to be about 8-13 lbs. The guy in the store said they were moving in. In his opinion not close enough to get caught at the dock.
The second appointment I was 5 minutes away from Les Davis so I went there from about 3:30-4:30pm. Using a herring filet and a one ounce banana weight. No follows, no bites. Everyone was bottom fishing. One person there caught 2 star fish. They have just pressure washed the dock at Les Davis so the wood was sticking up. Great place to get splinters. Don’t take any youngsters there unless they have gloves and are well padded.
