Finally got a weekend setup to get out with Jimmy Jimsoks to hopefully hook into some Coho, so this report is for all weekend….
Friday afternoon we found a school of Coho working some schools of candlefish, whipped out the spinning setups and I hooked a nice 5-6 lb hatchery fish (bonk, in the cooler he goes) on the first cast, but it was cold after that for us despite fish crashing on the surface after baitfish all over. This took place from about 4-5pm.
Went in and had that silver on the bbq for dinner, only to head back out targeting some kings on Friday night from 7-8:30pm, but only found some shakers. Bummer. That wrapped up the last of the King fishing for me this summer, was not a great year for the Chinook.
With hopes still high, we were up and at em at 5:30am all setup for Coho. We had some trouble for the first hour with seaweed in the water, we just couldn’t keep our lines clear, but when the tide cleared that out, the fishing became much more productive and consistent over the next two hours. Between 6:30 and 8:30 we brought 7 to the boat, only got 1 native, kept the 4 (2 a piece) for our limit, went in to clean up, fillet fish and get a nap in. We didn’t take any measurements or weigh the fish, but the two of the fish were probably in the 6-7lb. range, the other two were in the 4-5 lb range.
Went back at them for a short little outing Sunday morning, fished from 6:30 am until 8:30 am. Again, for that first hour, it was just a struggle to keep our lines in the water and weed-free. But when it cleared, we managed to hook into a few fish, unfortunately they weren’t biting as well as the previous morning. Lots of popped clips, but no fish on the hooks! Bummer! We had about 7 hits, only got 3 to stick and got 2 to the boat, lost one near the boat. Kept the one hatchery (Jimmy caught it ~ 5 ish lbs) and that wrapped up a great weekend.
Lures used were the Coho killer in any color. White Lightning, Army Truck, silver, chartreuse/glow. We fished them 4-5’ behind 8” Pro Troll flashers, Red or Green. They seem to be the hot lure out there, gotta bring more of those White Lightning ones next time, we only had one, and it was killin em!
We did some crabbing too, we got 6 on Friday night after a 5 soak, not great, but 6 crab is still 6 tasty crab…Better then nothin’…
