today we had a pretty full boat we had my neighbor and his son, my friend david, my dad and me. first we went to some shallow water to hopefully get the little ten year old into some fish. we were using spinning rods with 1oz black jigs and we caught probably 15fish in the couple hours we fished shallow. the youngin caught a 5lb cabazon that made things pretty exiting. I was using my stiff baitcaster with a whole herring on it while we were in less than 20ft and a ling grabed my herring and bent my rod down to the butt. the fish shook the single barbless hooks after about 30sec. we went to some deeper water and were fishing with larger jigs between 40 and 200ft. we caught a few rockfish and little lingcod. I then tied up a spreader bar setup that consisted of a cutplug greenling tail with a white grub threaded on the line ahead of it. the next drift i was fishing 100ft when my pull jerked down. I set the hook and started reeling him torwards the surface. my nieghbor is sorta a newb and i asked him if he knew how to net a big fish and he said no just as the fish was nearing the surface. he was able to net it but the couple of seconds it was hovering next to the boatr scared the crap out of me. ended up being my personal best lingcod, a very fat 36incher.
