As far as the conditions are concerned it was a 5 star day. No wind to speak of and clear skies making for some great views of the Cascades and Olympics. After dropping my crab pots in the water I started after the blackmouth by dragging a mini cut plug in 110' to 130' of water just inside the point of Port Madison. I found a bait ball and worked it over picking up a few fish in the 17" to 18" range for my efforts. After a couple of hours working the area I picked up shop and moved to Jeff Head. I had no sooner dropped my gear in the water when a large sea lion surfaced nearby to investigate. I had switched over to a B2 Mini Squid and worked it near the bottom in 130' to 140' of water. This yeilded 3 takedowns all of which sprung my line from the clip. 2 of the fish made it to the boat with one being just a hair shy of 22". The 3rd fish I lost about midway to the surface. Not sure if it was seal related, it was taking me a bit longer to get the fish up as it was stripping line occassionally. I called it a day a little after 1:00pm and checked the pots. 5 keeper dungies and 3 redrocks came home with me today! Checker at Shilshole said I was the first boat that she checked for the day, I guess the rest of the folks wanted to stay out and enjoy the weather a bit more! The number of large floating logs in the water today made me thankful the wind was down, making it easy to spot them. If you do go out, be sure you are focused on the water in front of the boat while you are underway.
