11/20/2011 1:48:00 PMFish/Man, I fish those same beaches whenever i am out there. I too use the razor clam necks. Did you do anything special to help keep the clam meat on the hooks? You said that "They really stay on the hook." I found it almost the opposite. Of course when you look at how far you are throwing the gear and into such ruff surf... I guess it's surprising the meat stays on at all, but I felt I went through a lot of clam.
I was considering using some thread to literally tie the whole glob of meat to the hook. Did you do anything like this? I also use a pretty small hook, because the surf perch have a fairly small mouth. I fish right in front of SeaBrook or Roosavelt Beach.

11/20/2011 6:46:00 PMHi Quadfather! I did waste come clam, but the bait I used to use was sand shrimp. Even with thread on the shrimp, bare clam necks stuck on way beat for me. I like to thread the tip of the siphon all the way over the hook onto the line, and put the cut end well over the hook point, leaving the hook point exposed. Kind of like is I was over zealously texas rigging a plastic worm (minus the excess tail of course). Probably stays for 15-20 minutes. Which given the surf I will take!!
