We had a couple hours to kill Monday mid-day so we headed off to Ala Spit to check out the spit on a minus tide. At the last minute I figured that I would haul my fly rod and the dogs along. On arrival at the spit we let the dogs out of the truck, I strung my fly rod and we headed off to explore. We checked out the exposed flats and found numerous large rock crabs and a bagillion clam squirts. If we had some tunes along it would have been just like the fountain at the Seattle Center.
I had planned to fish my way around the spit but soon found it difficult to cast with a dog frequently tangled up in my stripping pile, I guess that I should have brought the stripping basket. We did get to watch a nice dolly attack a school of what I think were chum fry swimming along the beach. I was going to make a few casts and work my fly through the spectacle but the dog noticed the happenings also decided to check it out first. All in all it was a great few hours, even if my fishing was limited to just a handful of casts.
