Wow, if bites and lost fish counted toward the rating this would be a “5”. My wife and I launched at Edmonds Sling and hit the slack tide change (7:30am) and it was on FIRE! All action was just north of the oil docks, about ¼ mile out.

We ran two rods off riggers at 55 ft and 65 ft and from 7:15 to 8:30 caught one and lost four. On top of that we had another 4-5 bites where the rod doubled over and released. Definitely not shakers – solid fish but not solid hook sets.

It was so wild that on one missed fish JoAnn set the rod down and the coho hit the hoochie on the surface, almost pulling the rod in! I have no idea why we could not nail the hooks into these fish. I’ve never had a day of missing so many fish. Hooks seemed sharp, kept boat in gear, rod up, etc, etc. I do plan on tying up my own leaders and using some better than average hooks.

The hot flasher color was red today, and hoochies were magnum green glow, but smaller combo had hits as well. I tackle tested Nate’s Bait Herring Cure on herring strips. (www.natesbaitfishingproducts.com) No complaints here – definitely got bit, like crazy. It does dye the herring green which is weird (I would prefer reddish) but the fish didn’t mind. I only was able to cure it for 8 hours, not the recommended 24, so I used some rock salt to firm up the herring strips.

At 9:45 I moved us over to the Possession horseshoe and same as last time I was there, saw a LOT of fish on the fish finder, but no takers. We called it a day at 11am.

Adendum – I just finished reviewing my go-pro footage and it is amazing. We had fish attacking our gear like crazy. I have one shot of a swarm of a half dozen coho around our hoochie. And a couple fish strikes that I don’t even recall happening (so next time you look back and see your rod is straight, it may not have just slipped out of the release – it may be Mr. Coho). I’ll be working on this footage for a future video.

red disappears in the deep water and green shows up to fish, that may be why the cure isnt red

yes, although once you drop below around 50 ft all is black, no light penetration.

Mike, I suggest trying the Matzuo Sickle hooks in the 4/0 size or the barbless Gamakatzu in the same size. The Matzuo hooks can be found in Siwash and Octopus style and are by far my favorite hook to use, if your lucky you can find them in a barbless style as well. My other thought is regarding the release clips. I picked up a little trick watching the skipper of a boat while fishing for kings on Lake Michigan. He would double up the line, twist it about 10 to 20 turns and then place it in the clip. Not only did this keep the lines solidly in the clip, it ensured any fish that released from the clip was well hooked. I've bee doing the same ever since and have found that even very thin 35lb braid will hold well in the clip with this method.

G-Man, I think thats a good point. Trolling so fast, these fish hit and release quickly, that's what the videos showed. (makes a really neat "pop" sound BTW) Not sure I understand what you mean by twist it though. I have some ultra sharp hooks I'm tying up tonight. :-)

Put a loop in your line, stick your finger through the loop, twist it 10-12 times, and put the twisted part into the release. Works well.
