Met up with my buddy Robb today to hit the Salt in search of Kings. Launched at Shilshole Marina. Dropped our crab pots before heading out to the deep water. We trolled for about an hour. Robb's pole was slammed about 45 minutes in. Pretty sure it was a King, but the clip on his down rigger didn't release and the fish came off after a minute or so. I had a similar problem so we decided to shift gears and head for shallower water in search of Pinks and Coho. Began trolling pink spoons North in about 20 feet of water when Robb's poll starts bouncing. I looked back to see a silver bullet break the surface about 75 feet behind the boat. It jumped three times and put up a good fight. Turned out to be a beautiful 5-6 lbs Coho. 10 minutes later it was my turn. Fish also jumped and put on a display, but then my line went limp I thought I lost it. Thankfully I was wrong. Robb said keep reeling it might be coming straight at the boat and sure enough he was right. I tightened up the slack and the fish went ballistic as it surfaced five feet from the boat. By some minor miracle we got it in the net and into the boat. Was another beautiful 5-6 lbs Coho. We turned the boat around and doubled back and forth through that area for about an hour. Robb had three more solid take downs that came unbuttoned. Saw two of the fish. The first one exploded to the surface and rolled off in the process. Saw the second one under the surface when his line was about 10 feet from the boat. I had a couple more bites as well but nothing as dramatic. After the bite died down, we decided it was time to head back and check the crab pots. Had 15 crab in the pots, but only three keepers. Still, had a great day on the water. We each caught a nice fish for diner and got some crab for the appetizer!!
