Stopped by Carkeek at sunset to try for a pink. When I got there, the drizzling rain had just stopped and I basically had the beach to myself. There were lots of fish rising near the shore so I tried casting some spinners with no success. Switched back to a buzz bomb and after a few casts I got a brief hook up, but no fish.

I was getting ready to head home soon, but got a savage strike, and when I landed it, it turned out to be a coho! A nice little surprise, but the fish had a surprise of its own. Turns out the meat had parasites, which was a shame because it had nice red flesh. Afterwards I realized that the head did have a funny looking green color to it which you can kinda see in the picture. Is there any way to tell if it has a parasite before you keep it?

I noticed last year the missing scales that look like spots are a good indicator.

Was the parasite on the skin, or in the meat

little white cysts in the meat- the scientific name would be "Henneguya salminicola"

what is the problem with parasites? dont you just freeze or cook it to kill it? as long as you're not eating it as sashimi?

these are parasites you can see with the naked eye, not microscopic ones that die from cooking/freezing. It would probably be safe cooked but biting into a pearl sized, fluid filled cyst is pretty unappetizing to say the least.
