An Epic Day at Edmonds

Wow, sometimes fate plays a big role in one’s fishing success. After yesterday’s poor fishing at Shipwreck, I decided to forego the pinks and target silvers. Changed all my flashers and hoochies to silver-friendly gear and decided to again run out to Possession, but this time run the gear at coho speed and forget about humpies. Then, prior to launching, our friends Bill and Joanie struck up a conversation with a retired gentleman who happens to want to hunt elk in Montana – in Roundup, which guess where Bill and Joanie are from!?!?! Anyway, he tells them he has limited the past three days just off the Marina at Edmonds. Well, that was all I needed to hear. Change the Plan again! We start fishing around 6:20am, running two downriggers and a center rod. The high tide for today is 11am. JoAnn is with us as well today, but I’m not running a casting rod today. We are strictly coho fishing. Boat is running at 2.8-3.5 mph. The water has a bit of a chop on it this morning, not too bad. The tide is fairly mild, about a five foot change. Things are quiet to start. I’m marking fish, and figure we’ll run into some at some point, or the bite will magically turn on. A little of both happens.

At 9am the center rod goes off. 50 pulls on a Deep Six, with white mini flasher and a yellow glow hoochie and herring strip. Bill grabs the rod and brings in our first silver of the day, a respectable five pounder. Skunk out of the boat and smiles all around, the skipper/guide is feeling very fortunate there will be no skunks today.

Things go quiet again, until at around 10am we get a classic salmon bite the runs about an hour and a half. First the port downrigger rod pops off, 50 feet deep, greenish holograph flash magnum flasher and a magnum green glow hoochie with herring strip. This 6.5 pound fish is caught by Joanie. Great, both guests have caught a fish! Then, the bite continues. Most on the port rod at 50 feet, and a couple bites on the starboard rod at 57 feet. We started to unfortunately lose a lot of fish, 7 out of 8. But, it almost doesn’t seem to matter. We have three very nice chrome bright coho in the cooler and non-stop action that our Montana friends won’t forget any time soon.

The bite ends at 11:20am. We bring the gear up at noon and call it a day.
