I just can't imagine the tuna fishing ever being as good as it is right now..... This is my first couple months, so, I don't have anything to compare it to. I momentarily look back at all those years I could have enjoyed this fishery, then, I realize how good I have it right now....! I nailed 18 to the wall on Friday.
There was no one anywhere close to me the whole day of fishing... a commercial troller was far in the distance for one pass.
Water conditions were incredibly good in the a.m., turned slightly sour in the early evening.
The last two trips out, the bite completely died by noonish/1ish... almost senseless to stay any longer BUT, I'll keep at it.. I figure that I work so hard to get so far off the coast, I may as well stick around to enjoy the peace and scenery and I was hoping for an early evening bite.
I didn't see even one clear jumper the whole day, nor did I see boils except right at the boat during bait stop/drift. I'm very fortunate to have found any fish. There were no birds in the area I fished, I just thought it was a good place to take a rest after the 2 hour cruise getting out there. Heck, I didn't even have a chance to eat a sandwich for a couple hours!
It sounds like from other reports that the fish concentrations are high and spread out over a LARGE area. I don't know this to be a fact, it just sounds like it is so....
I didn't even bother trolling this trip. LIVE BAIT ALL THE WAY BABY! Pick a spot and drift! Chum sparingly!
I spent the day on the water at WP catching tuna. Dark to dark! Pulling my boat towards the ramp, a gill netter sped up and sorta cut in front of me. As he approached the dock on the left, I felt thankful cause I wanted the right side.. and motored to come parallel on his starboard, but, I hung back just in case.. THEN... he lost control of everything that has to do with landing a boat... his bow was at the left or east dock, his stern was at the the right or south dock... completely blocking the docks at the ramp... I would have been crushed if I hadn't held back.... While all of this was going on, I heard someone on the adjacent boat dock, transient/visitor dock(?), said something about my boat being too small to fish for tuna.... Now, he may have just been describing what had been written on Bloody Decks about me... IDK.. I think so. I bellowed "THIS BOAT IS JUST RIGHT TO FISH FOR TUNA!" or something very close. That started up a very short conversation about where to fish, them. They asked "west", I said, "now that's a secret." I said SW..... I'll add here: IT SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE IN GOOD CONCENTRATIONS WEST THROUGH SW, close in this side of the 125 to far out beyond the 125... There is no secret spot at this time! HOWEVER: get your fishing in early, bite dies completely for the day by noonish/oneish... that will change but maybe not this year.
By this time the guy got his gill netter straightened out and I motored to the launch dock.... moving by this time solely on adrenaline. I rushed to get my boat out of the launch, that gill netter wasn't totally in control of his machine.
WARNING!!!!!!! He pulled his boat alongside of mine once he trailered up. Then talked extensively about selling my tuna!!!!!!
I don't think it was a sting but it could have been, he obviously didn't know how to drive his boat. I wouldn't bite. Careful boys and girls!
