Went out to try for some sea run cutthroat on...GASP...Spinning Gear! I've seen them while salmon fishing on the beach and occasionally had them come right up to my feet only to realize they cant bite a salmon size lure. So, put together a few spinners to see if I could catch one.
From my past experiences, Ive noticed that SRC's are more active on the incoming tide, and I got to the beach a hour and a half before high tide. The weather was sunny and windy. I've also noticed that they are more active in a light drizzle. I found a nice shallow rocky spot, and about ten casts in, Wham! Heavy takedown! He was pretty calm until he saw me and then went berserk as I was hastily setting up the gopro (forgot to strap it on). Easily 12-13 inches. Let it swim off and back to casting. A couple more casts late, Wham! Another cutt about 10-11 inches and this time I got the whole thing on camera. Let it go and probably told his buddies and the school took off. No more bites so I left after high tide. The ticket was a 3/8 ounce or so size 3 nickel spinner with a small swivel to the single barbless hook. A heavier spinner is needed to get down in the waves and for a bit of casting distance. I think I found a favorite new close to home fishery!
