Got a rare chance to go target Chinook in PS with a friend. Usually it's closed by the time we can get out. Decided to go try Midchannel to see what might be there. Hit the launch at 4:30am and were the only ones there. It's nice launching when you have the place all to yourself! Of course it was O'dark-thirty. We fired up the nav. lights and worked our way over to Port Townsend. The water was void of boats. We set up our gear by headlamps and had our lines in the water at 5am. We spent a good 30 minutes re-learning how to fish, so after dusting off those cobwebs we proceeded to troll the Midchannel slot with the tides. The first other boat didn't show up until after 6am and then a few more showed up around 7 to 8am. Most trolling, but some jigging. We trolled various depths between 75-150 feet. We altered DR depth setting occasionally, but mainly stuck to keeping at least one or both dragging the bottom. We started with some recommended Coho Killers behind green flashers, then switched to squid skirts in various colors, then Coyote spoons, etc., etc., cycling through different options. Had one of our DRs break around noon (fortunately did not result in losing any gear). Still had two rods in the water, but one was now running shallow by default. We stuck it out until 2pm before throwing in the towel. Not even a shaker or tripped DR for excitement.
The weather was cloudy to hazy with a stiff breeze after first light and brief rain showers. There were probably a dozen boats out there at most during the morning. Only saw a couple that looked like they may have hooked up, but never saw any fish netted. Still a good time getting out to give it a try, but it sure seemed dead out there.
