Hit my go to spot early around 5:40 and waited for the sun to come up. Great day weather wise and for wildlife veiwing. There was porpoise everywhere. Fishing was much slower than I am used to at this time of year though. Seems like the resident coho im used to catching all through August just havent been around this year. Anyone else noticing this? Maybe its just the area I fish. Anyway I did manage one small fish about 2.5 or 3 lbs. Tiny but my first coho this year so I wasnt going to complain too much. My main method was herring and float. That didnt really catch anything but flatfish and sculpin. I downsized to floating small herring strips just under the surface and thats how I got my fish. Im patiently waiting for the bigger coho to start showing up.

kingstonT... nice fish... been difficult this year. I usually have made a couple of trips to west side of Whidbey Island by now, but calls there have said "no fish". Attended a seminar last week on Coho fishing and the instructor (seemed to know what he was talking about) said that because of the warm summer, most of the resident Coho have migrated north, near the Strait. Also, said that the Japanese Current (warm water) has moved north, to within 10 miles of Neah Bay (charters have caught Tuna ten miles out), the Coho are stacked up offshore, outside the warm waters and will not swim through those waters. He said we need rain and north winds to scour out the warm waters, or the Coho won't come in. He said the same scenario happened in 2008, when the fish finally did come into the Sound, they were "lock-jawed" and went straight into the rivers. Pray for rain! PTL!

That all makes sense. I kinda figured it related to the warmer weather this summer. Saw three fish caught this evening though so there are a few out there.
