Checked the calendar, checked My Reports for previous years posts, yup it’s Puget Sound Coho Time!

First trip out I was joined by Gringo Pescador and my friend Scott from work (his first time ever fishing, much to my amazement!). The Game Plan was to launch out of Shilshole and run up to Possession. I wanted to avoid Edmonds and the weekend derby insanity, only to step right into the Shilshole Kayak Salmon Derby. I try to avoid fishing weekend but what can you do? Anyway, even with the weekend Possession has plenty of room to fish.

We launched at O’Dark hundred with the other dozens of boats in line and ran up to Possession. HT was 8:55am so I began our troll on the west side of the bar, running from the horseshow to the point. We ran three rods, two on riggers and one center rod on a small diver back 50 pulls. It didn’t take too long to get the first hit, and then the “Fish On” call started up. Since Scott had never fished before it was only fair to hand off the first couple fish to him, which both promptly got lost. Fish number three on Gringo’s side and we decided to get some in the cooler so he brought it in. Our action thus far was in the 55-65 ft range on the riggers, running large flashers, magnum hoochies, and herring strips brined in Nate’s Bait herring brine with a few “extras”. Mark was running a very nice little pink hoochie on his rig.

Things quieted down for a bit, until again Mark’s rod had a take-down, deeper, I believe 70ft? Anyway, Scott played this one to the side of the boat and we released an 18” blackmouth, explaining the why for to him. He was cool with it, in fact, the morning we gave Scott a crash Trolling Salmon 101 seminar. The weather and conditions were perfect BTW, and while there were a lot of boats, it was nothing like the Edmonds area!

We managed one more smaller coho and for us the bite died off as the tide switched. We left kind of early – 10:30am, because I had a hike to get to with my son. Burning the candle at both ends!

It was a pleasant morning of fishing. We gave Scott the two salmon. He asked “How do you clean them?”. I told him I already gutted them. “How do you cook them?”. We recommended he cut them into steaks and instructed on basic salmon cooking. I’m sure he’ll do fine with those beautiful chrome gifts from the Sound.

Mike, does it seem from what you read/hear, that the fish are a little small this year so far?
Do the larger fish show up later?

I went out by myself last week, got 2 on Wed and 2 on Friday. They are running on the small side, 5-6 pounds. But it always seems like the larger fish show up later on in Sept and into Oct.

I think the guys have been fishing too deep. Last Wed I fished all over, East/West Poss, mid channel between Poss and the Wreck, Spanish house etc., zero! But then I went shallow about 11 fished just south of Picnic Pt, 1 mile or so south of the wreck, 150 FOW, got 2 in 15 minutes. Friday fished the same spot, got my 2 done by 7:30. I'll try that again tomorrow. I know John Martinis, Mike Chamberlain and others always say fish deep. Not always true, move around they can be anywhere.
