Picked up buddy Joel to fish the Everett Coho Derby my first time, 3:00am alarm time. At the launch early was a good idea because it was windy and rough in my sled so we had to keep it slow motoring out in the dark. Lines down to 65ft at first fishing light, first fish within about 5-10 minutes of second gear down. Red Racer & Purple Haze with Ace insert on first fish. Second bite was a few minutes later on the green squid but didn't stick. Next fish on purple haze, was the biggest we would boat, nice wild fish. Changed green rod to the purple haze and ran back to troll the same spot with the tide. Fish on right away, 3 in the boat and Joel's first salmon in years. Next fish was our biggest but new angler & rough conditions we lost it before I could get netted. Taught my buddy how to drop the gear & set the drag etc., 4th fish came on our third pass. We were done by about 8:30, weighed in then hit Ray's for some bacon burger goodness. Changing tactics to only troll with the tide & run back down to troll through again turned out to be the ticket.
I still see beach anglers asking for comments on location to fish. Research some productive setups, pick a beach, and wet a line. It doesnt matter. All of area 9 and 8-2 is producing fish.
Tight lines!
