Launched out of Shilshoe @ 0645, heading north after hearing reports from fish checker previous day of fish being caught up front and towards Carkeek Park. 3 on the boat, 2 w/riggers; 35' & 50', brother using 4 oz weight with herring in back. Was pretty crowded early fishing mid-channel, marking bait on top to 75', but most heavy marking was @ 150'-300', seemed pretty deep this early. Trolled back & forth with my brother getting 2 quick hits, and gone. Friend @ 35' gets a nice take down and brings up a 4#er, purple haze flasher w/green squid. Pretty much all the action, saw 3 nets out, 1 was a doubleheader, but they lost 1 at the boat. Fished until 0930. water getting choppy, winds blowing from the north,...just curious, my brother keeps his rigger cable @ about a 45 degree angle, what do you guys keep yours at? Just trying to pick brains here,..

Trolling at 3.0-3.5 with Cabelas Depth Trac downrigger braid, I get about a 70 degree angle. At 45 degrees your probably only trolling around 2mph which is too slow for coho.

I read that a lot. Last serious effort out on the penninsula was the 9 hits, 4 fish, get skunked disaster, all at about 1.7 mph. It is true that you can't troll too fast for silvers, but it is hardly evidenced in my experience that going slow prevents hits. If I recall, 45 degrees sounds about what we generally do.

Don't be afraid to stretch that cable out there. The cable (or braid) goes down in a teardrop, the closer it gets to the ball the steeper the cable actually is. Even though it seems like the gear is running pretty shallow it really isn't. Two of us got our 4 today, just filed a report. .

45-60 degrees angle on the cable (anywhere from 2.8 - 3.8 MPH over ground) seems to do the trick depending on how fast the current is running.

Thank you gentlemen, and yes current always plays a factor, and more hits going with than without, we usually shoot back up and go with it.
