Squidding Report for Friday, Nov. 21, 2014.
Went squidding from about 8pm - 1 am on Friday night with a friend of mine (Minh). We started an hour before high tide and were in the water by 8:00PM.
The night started really slow, catching a few small squid (4-6 inches not including the tentacles) - but it was very consistent. I was working the bottom, and every few cast either Minh or I would hook up on a "regular" size squid. We had 2 nice LED lights, one pointing out at about a 45 degree angle to the water and a second pointing straight down. One for distance/spread and one for deep water penetration.
Until about midnight, we had both caught a decent amount... maybe a pound or two (25-30 squid each) but they were pretty small. Right before we were going to call it a night a HUGE school came in and we were hitting doubles and JUMBO's on every cast! We probably caught more in the first 10 minutes (by weight) then we did the first 4 hours.
The school of jumbos lasted about 7-8 minutes and slowed down to a dead stop. As we were wrapping up... i kept throwing my jigs out and another school came... this happened 2 more times and we were killing it! Some other guys came right before midnight and might have brought the luck with them... either that or they just had really good timing. They caught just as much as us and there was literally always one person hooked up. It was a race to see who could wind their reel up fastest and dump their squid in the bucket - gettting back into the water. We missed our bucket many times... but didn't once stop to pick up the squid squirting on the pier deck.... priorities man...
So for the last 30 minutes or so we caught about 25-30 more squid but they were all HUGE. From the tip of my fingers to halfway down my arm! (see pics) The one in the pic is the biggest one I caught but they were just about all around that size... it was a great night and I'm glad we stayed just a bit longer.

Get out to Ruston Way in Tacoma an hour before high tide, bring a light or bum one off someone down there- but squid are in now. The colder/wetter the weather the better for me... or anytime you can get out there is a good time. I also heard Des Moines is hitting all night - all jumbos (haven't been out there personally), Port Orchard is good and even in Seattle near the ferris wheel and "Crab Pot Restaurant."
Caught enough squid to give away to all of my aunts/uncles and still enough to bring a plate of calamari into work that would probably cost 40-50$ worth of appetizers at any decent restaurant.
I was using double jigs, one unweighted (pink) up top and a weighted (glow color only) on the bottom.
Good luck!!
Best,
Linh
