Fished out of Westport for kings today. We launched at 0630 and everyone headed south after crossing the bar, so we decided to head north. We started trolling with divers, mini fish flash and herring starting at three miles up the beach in 45 feet of water like we did last year.
No bites after an hour so we headed due west from where we were about six miles north of the jetty until we got to 100 FOW. We switched to downriggers and hardware. I was running a 3.5 cookies and cream spoon behind an orange and gold shortbus flasher. Dropped it to 75 feet and hooked up about ten minutes later and landed and bonked a 12 pound hatchery king.
That lead us to waste another two hours up north without a sniff. Started listening to the vhf and heard a lot of frustration, but a few successful people south of the GH buoy. We ran down there and switched to a purple haze flasher and a 4.5 cookies and cream spoon. Caught 2 more hatchery fish and a native over the next two hours. The wind picked and it was getting pretty choppy so we called it a day. WDFW checker said there were lots of people who got skunked and only a couple limits.
