What a day! One that didn't start off all that well. I have been getting my limit of pinks salmon just north of Meadows Point and south of Wells Point, but Thursday proved tough around there. I had my fishing buddy and fellow member Joe Ortega along. I had been getting pinks regularly and easily, so I was disappointed that I hadn't gotten Joe some pinks by then. Remembering the times of the tides for the day, we decided to run up to the shipwreck, and get there just as the tide turned and began coming in. It wasn't long after getting to the shipwreck that our luck changed. After fishing a few minutes, we got a double header, and Joe managed to net both at the same time. Two in the net! Joe then caught another pink, then we got another double header, and I managed to net both at the same time.
Fish were at depths from 35 feet early down to 70 feet for the last one just after noon. Speed registered by GPS was around 1.5, although that changed slightly with wind and direction, with or against the tide. Water depth varied from 150 feet to 500 feet. Once the incoming tide bite was on, it didn't seem to matter which direction we trolled, north or south. We were geared up with 11" white flashers with reflective tape (they were the only ones available when I went pink shopping) and pink hootchies with 30 lb. leader at 16 inches. I made up my own leaders and added some glo beads to space the hook to be just at the end of the skirt or a little further out. One hootchie also had some tinsel tied to a pink hook. These fish do have tender mouths. One I got had a tear in it's lower lip from a previous hookup. I was so relieved that Joes got his limit on my boat, and that we both got two fish in the same net.
