After Wednesday's great trip, my wife, Boni, was anxious to get back to the beach. It was her idea... honestly! We both had previous commitments to be out of town on Thursday afternoon, but, she reasoned, "we could fish the morning". When your wife wants to go fishing, how can you say "no"?... really! Thursday presented the worst case scenario so far as tide change is concerned... low (less than a foot) at 8:00 AM and we had to leave by 10:00... I didn't expect much but, it is still fishing... and I love it!
We arrived at 6:45, on the beach at 7:00. Nine others already on the beach. I was casting the chartreuse Rotator with a pink hoochie, Boni fishing a herring under a float. Most of the first hour was spent cleaning eel grass off our hooks. Boni caught a nice sized Red Rock Crab when her float came in too close to the beach. About 7:45 I had a quick "grab and go" on the Rotator... fish were definitely in the area. Saw two fish caught by Sea Lions, a ways off shore. Saw several fish leaping out of the water nearby. About 8:30 we watched a fish surface and create a large swirl on the surface, just behind Boni's float, but didn't take the herring. Twice her float bobbled on the surface and tell-tale tooth-marks indicated that a salmon had grabbed the herring but failed to hook itself. About 9:15 I finally had a hard hit on the Rotator and it was FISH ON... great fight, thrashing on the surface, several bulldog runs and leaps out of the water, then able to beach a beautiful wild buck Coho that weighed in at 4# 10oz on the digital scale, dressed. Had one more hard hit without a hook-up, just before we left at 10:00, hours before the best fishing time of the day.
Was a great morning at the beach! Always enjoy the opportunity to spend time with my wife, so thankful that she has become a big fan of fishing with me. Saw two other Coho landed while we were there, and several other hook-ups that came unbuttoned... so hard to keep tension on the barbless hook when the fish is leaping and thrashing about on the surface of the water. Should be several more weeks of prime Coho fishing as we head into October. PTL!
