I figured I would submit a report for the islands as no one has really had any real opportunities to get out due to the horrendous storm conditions we have been having through November and December. With no sign of letting up, hopefully we will have a season extending into the spring!
We fished the usual haunts, launched out of WA Park around 0800 and made the run to Lopez Flats. Trolled due South in a very strong south easterly wind, probably a sustained 25 kts and gusting when we arrived around 08:30. The wind made the conditions pretty sporty but not unfishable on a following sea. We had 3 good takes in the first pass, and managed 1 legal size fish.
After that pass the wind decided to calm down and change directions, so we made a judgment call to run to Salmon Bank. It was a good call, the Easterlies were almost completely blocked by the islands and the water was nice and calm. We ended up landing 3 legal sized fish over there, 2 with an extra fin that had to go back.
All fish were caught on spoons, and were small 5 lb cookie cutter blackmouth.
There are fish around if you are willing to put in the time, hopefully as the season progresses they will have time to get a little bigger.
