Got out to the river to my normal spot at sunrise. Plunked some eggs out and got nothing. after an hour, I drifted the eggs and caught 1 fish. To me, it looked like a 2lb rainbow trout, but the guy beside me told me it was a jack (immature) coho. He had spots all down his back, normal white mouth (coho should have black tongue), and a redish/pinkish/purplish band down its sides (think that's how I'd describe a rainbow). I tried to snap a picture, but i planned on returning him to the water, so I hurried too much and the picture did not turn out. Oh, he also had a clipped adipose fin. Maybe someone has a better way to tell the difference, please let me know.

Cliped atipose fin means that it is a hatchery silver salmon.
They don't clip the atipose fins on trout.

Steelhead and rainbows are two different things.

Sorry I said trout above I mean to say rainbow trout.

They do clip the fins on steelhead. Steelhead are rainbow trout by the way.

acctualy there is a big difference, first there genetics, steelhead have larger mouth's and travle to the ocean, what you caught was most likely a hatchery silver or steelhead

Steelhead are saltwater rainbows. They spend the year in teh saltwater, and they return year after year to spawn in the rivers and unlike salmon, they do not die after spawning.

yeah, i'm pretty sure it was a small steelhead, as I didnt see any color to the mouth, but that is the only real difference i'd notice. Any other characteristics to look for to show a difference? Also, the regs say that they (hatchery steelhead) may have their ventral fins clipped. I had no idea that they did that, so I didnt even inspect those.
