Was up in Metaline with my wife and son visiting my mom for mother's day and took my son down to the city boat lunch for an hour or so. It had been raining pretty good all morning and pretty windy but saw a good break and took the opportunity. Got some Werner's Wigglers (best worms around) at the mini-mart and hit the launch around 2pm or so. It was quite windy and frigid in a wind breaker and I thought we wouldnt be able to stay but the wind died down and the sun came out shortly after we got there. The water was up pretty high above average, well above the boat launch and going pretty swift (the box canyon dam spillway was open). I threw out a worm put on with a worm threader and a small bit of purple powerbait (nymph scent) on my line and orange glitter powerbait on my son. It took maybe 10 minutes to get our first bite. My line was the first to get set and I reeled in a nice 11" rainbow...and wouldnt you know it, all my pliers and dehookers were left at home in Deer Park. So I took the hook off from the swivel and put the fish on a stringer. A little while later my son got a bite but was unable to set the hook for him cause my pole got a really big tug. So i handed him his pole hoping he could get one on his own (he is 3yrs old) and set mine and reeled in a 14.5" rainbow, a very beautiful fish (sorry didnt get a picture). After rebaiting both lines, with the purple powerbait. I threw out my sons line and before I could even get mine out he was getting action. I set the hook but he was unable to reel it in so he asked me to, and (with his help) we brought in a 20" sucker. We turned it back as bird food and by the time it drifted down the current about 100 feet and large bald eagle came down and easily picked it out of the water. If that was the only fish we caught that day I would have been happy with the experience of seeing a bald eagle come swooping down so close, it was a magnificent specimen....and it was undaunted by the crow following after trying to get it to drop the fish. We had some more good bites but they stripped the hooks before we could set them, then it started to rain again so we went back to grandma's house. During the summer last eyar this spot was a hot spot for small mouths but today it was all trout! I took both fish home cause my son said he wanted to eat them, next weekend I'll try my best to cook em up....have never cooked trout before (work evening shift all week so will have to wait for the weekend).
