Started off by going to the tackle and bait shop heading up towards the canyon to buy bait and ask where everyone has been catching fish. I told me that most of the steelhead were being caught in the canyon and had heard of a few spring kings coming up down towards the mouth. Last year I fished for a winter and summer steelhead on various rivers, and only managed to hook into one summer run on the Kalama that snapped me off around a rock after a good battle. I decided to fish down towards the mouth becuase i felt i would increase my chances of catching something since the Springers are begining to come up. Started throwing spinners with no luck then started to drift fish really not expecting to catch any and more enjoying the nice sunny day. A drift boat with two guys came down told me they caught four fish two in the same hole just above where i was. This got me excited so i started to fish more seriously. Moved down to another hole in some fast moving water. Felt a strike set the hook and missed. Checked my bait and found out some how my hook was turned upside down. I fixed it hoping I would get another chance. I was just getting ready to move to another hole when I got another strike. Set the hook this time I got him. He shot off straight down river . I chased him for about 25 yards before I got him turned around. After 5 min. of battling each other, him jumping out of the water and thrashing all around. I got him to the shore snuck up behind him in the water and ran a nice bright 12 pound buck using 8 pound test up on the sandy beach. Ive caught a few steelhead before, but this was by far the most fun. Hope this report helps and good luck to everyone.
