Met up with Curado early in Monroe and headed out the the wallace mouth. Worked the wallace from the train bridge down to the sky. Saw one guy walk out with a 4lb jack. We fished the mouth for hours but only came up with smolt that kept foul hooking themselves on our gear as we brought it to shore. Curado had one soild hookup on a spoon, but the fish snapped his swivle. Estimates were about a 12lb king.
I decided to leave the wallace mouth and headed up stream. I came across a large span of shoreline without a single person in it and some good looking holes and seams. I picked the first seam, waded out a few feet, and dropped a sand shrimp into the fast current and watched the line as it drifted into the pool below. The fish hit it hard and peeled line. My drag wasn't set so I ended up thumbing down on the spool and walking her into the shore. I'd get her close, she would peel off and burn my thumb. In the end she lost. 28" and was 6lbs went I got her home, minus blood and inards, I guess she went 6 1/2. My first steelhead and a great reward for a long day. Hats off to Curado for putting me on the fish and showing me a new bait. He knows the system. Other than the jack and my steel, the wallace didn't produce anything all day but a couple of lost hookups. I'll be back.
